The town of Emerald is the business centre for the Central Highlands region, home to around 14,300 people. Sitting on the Nogoa River, Emerald is a thriving rural service centre with a large number of farm machinery sales outlets and the large Fairbairn irrigation dam to supply local farmers with water for cotton, citrus and other horticulture operations. For some family fun and relaxation enjoy a picnic in the Botanic Gardens, participate in the water sports at Lake Maraboon or go fishing for barramundi in Fairbairn Dam.
